The CPU is one of the most important, and most expensive components of your gaming computer. Depending on your build, the only thing more expensive might wind up being your video card. Here we’re going to look at 3 CPUs that we think give you the best bang for the buck in 3 different price categories. Under $100, $101 – $200, and $201 – $400.
$100 is a very difficult price point. There are some great CPUs at that price, but you’re going to wind up with a model that’s a couple years out of date. The best CPU that we’ve found under $100 is the AMD FX-6300. This is a 6 core processor that fits in an AM3+ socket, and it clocks in at 3.5ghz. Like mentioned before, this is not a brand new model processor. In fact, it’s more than 3 years old. Don’t let that fool you though – this CPU packs a punch, and is your best bet under $100. I personally trust the Passmark CPU Mark scores as my favorite CPU benchmark, and this processor scores a 6344. For comparison, the Intel Core2 Quad 6600 only has a CPU Mark score of 2979, but it costs $140. Going in the other direction, the Intel Core i5-3570K has a higher CPU Mark at 7,133, but it costs a whopping $400.
